HORRORS OF THE PITCHER PLANT WORLD
By David - Kuala Lumpur, Mal
On the faithful day of 27 January 2007…
I had a visitor….
A visitor to my tiny cubicle…
My little corner in the office…
Its her, its her…
It’s my new boss…
Visiting my little space…
What words would she utter…
What compliments… or
What chastising would I receive…
No, it was none the above…
Nothing of that sort…
Nothing that I was ready for…
“What’s that…!”
“What’s that you have there…”
“What strange thing is that…”
At that cue I gurdled my “pitcher” cap…
At that moment I was ready to go…
Ready to share with her the wonders of the pitcher plant world
As I opened my mouth to speak…
She blurted out…
Eh! Bull’s Balls or what?!!!
silence…
I was speachless…
What horrors my ears have heard…
What insult to my precious “pets”.
What an unexpected twist…
My precious, precious “pets”…
To my “pets” on my computer screen…
I shall not forget…
I shall remember…
I shall stuff a whole bunch of Post-it in her mouth…!!!
silence…
But I left without a fight…
Without post-it in her mouth…
For I’m a coward…
A coward to my grave…
My precious, My pets…
Forgive me…
Forgive me for showing you such horrors of creation…
I shall hence forth promise to keep you safe…
Safe from these walking talking horrors of the pitcher plant world…

H-DAY DIARY OF A VENTRATA
By alcran - Long Island, NY
2 February 2009
I still remember the darkest days of my shipment. Days where water was scarce, humidity suffocating, and light nonexistant. As far as I know I am the only one that made it out alive. There were three hundred of us, all fresh from the explant in Holland. We thought that we were going to heaven. The first plastic cup should have tipped me off. We spent a dark week in transit.
The venus flytraps began to wilt because some idiot did not pack them properly. Finally, we got our first peak of light. But is was not the sun, only the weak glow of flourecents far above. After being repacked and jostled about we were shipped out again. Box 10 containing the Judith Finns was crushed in transit. We were dropping like flies. Some began to pray for the warm tc medium back in Europe. Many suspected sabotage.
Finally we made it. The survivers let out sighs of relief. We should have known that it was only the beginning. Shortly after being unpacked we were put under the shade of some palms in a suffocating greenhouse. The orchids sneered at us and we were separated from our brothers. From my position I could see the torment of the venus flytraps as they closed their traps again and again even though there were no bugs. The Purp division had a tough time too. They were specialist at low light, but this, this was certain death. They grew more spindly as time moved on.
The venus flytraps sold out first, going off to sadistic bipeds that seemed to enjoy watching the traps close. A few purps and several plants from my division went in the next couple of weeks. By now more than half of my division went to fungus, mold, and now water. The effects were showing on me too. All my pitchers had dried up and my internodes had become unnaturally long. Two months into my occupation of the shelf showed a sorry sight. Almost all my brothers had died, I was the only healthy one left. The rest had blackened their growth tips and died.
Three months into the shelf occupation a person stops to look at the shelf. He seems different from the others. The way he looked at my leaves and stem reminded me of the flask back home. Suddenly he grabbed my pot and brought me to the register. This time I was in a cup holder as I was spirited away from that slaughter house.
I will forever remember the name of that place. Home Depot, the root of all evils. It was the first day in months that I got fresh air, water, and sunlight.
In remembrance of my brothers I tell this story. This day is forever called H-Day.

THE LURE OF THE NEPENTHES
By funkychips - Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
4 February 2009
In my garden, there is this creature
Come of tales and myths long told
Green is this terror of alien feature
Recited and named among men of old
Thus began the humble, innocent cells,
Sprouting from the rosettes of life
Up and beyond it stretched and unfurled
For growth hath no fury like haste scorned
But beware, the dark designs thus shaped
The end, the edge, the tip last followedth
Concealed for now, but forever not
The trap of doom that was to come
Days gone by, the hours were spent,
The sun, the rain, the roots grew deep,
The craft worked forth now its concealment,
A thin veil to ease its hidden passing
A tendril came forth, amidst the silence
Invisible hands to guide the dance,
As it catches on to a stage of sorts
The curtains will rise and the show begins
Embellished with vigour and in sight of light
The craft continues its designs unharmed
With force, it expells its glory unfettered,
Beyond the imagination, comes a being of fright
Big and vast did it expand without fail
A vessel of the highest complexities
The lid, immaculate but not insidous
A tongue that speaks before the beast
Thus the hour hath come for the world
To ponder and reel at this creation
For no man hath failed to apprehend
The lure of the creature that is the Nepenthe.
